Ingjerd has lived all her life surrounded by Norwegian nature. Having her passion for hiking, she has been walking along the Way to Trondheim for many years. During the summer of 2022 on her walk, she shared her travel photos with the rurAllure, winning 1st place of the photo contest for St Olav. We have asked her a few questions to learn more about the route and her adventures.
Who is Ingjerd and how did the passion for hiking come about?
I am Ingjerd, an innovative 55-year-old project manager and university lecturer from Norway. All my life, I have lived in the middle of Norwegian nature – and have always enjoyed exploring it. With my husband and eventually children and grandchildren, hiking to the mountains and along the sea has been an important part of daily life and holidays.
What prompted you to travel the Way of Saint Olav and which stages did you visit?
I am particularly interested in cultural heritage and how Olav Haraldson’s last journey before the historic battle at Stiklestad in 1030 is well adapted for many good experiences. I have walked small parts of the 350-mile-long path of the pilgrimages to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim throughout the country for several years, mostly on the Gudbrandsdalen Path. The goal – Trondheim and the spectacular Nidaros Cathedral – is a distinctive experience.
What would you recommend to those who would like to explore the country by walking?
There is always a hiking trail that suits you in Norway – whether you are well-trained or just like to go for a little walk! Well-organized and marked trails along fjords, in forests, and up to the high mountain peaks in Jotunheimen, the home of the Trolls. In the mountains, you can go from cabin to cabin all summer, but spending the night at the lighthouse after a windy day along the coastal path is my favorite, I think.
What kind of challenges have you encountered on the road?
In Norway, the weather can change quickly, so that’s probably the challenge I’ve faced most time.
